Zoom News: Update to Version 5.8.0

Zoom News

The latest Zoom Update to version 5.8.0 offers a couple of features that can be handy for the classroom. The first is “poll access for alternative hosts” which allows an alternative host to add or edit polls. When multiple instructors are in a canvas course, typically a primary instructor is the host, and all other instructors are automatically listed as alternative hosts to meetings created in Canvas. This feature provides all instructors in the canvas course the ability to add and edit polls for meetings. This is helpful for faculty who want to create polls to use but were listed as alternative hosts.

Stop Incoming Video

Another feature that impacts the classroom is the “Stop all incoming video feature” which is a handy feature that allows a participant to stop incoming video feeds on their screen to save on bandwidth and computer resources during a meeting. It can also be useful to limit mental fatigue from viewing multiple video feeds. This does not impact others’ views and would not impact the sharing of your own video stream. You may want to make students aware of this feature if they are having issues with their connection. Alternatively, if you as the instructor want to stop students from seeing each other’s video feeds while still being able to see theirs, take a look at Focus Mode which was released a month or so ago.

Documentation on the Stop All Incoming Video Feature can be found on the Zoom Support Site –
