As a part of the Learning and Educational Center’s continuous efforts to promote course quality and academic success, we have created a fresh new look with three new Canvas Course Template options for the upcoming 2021 Fall term. The new template pages have a sleek, visually appealing look and feel while remaining quality-focused to assist faculty in creating courses that provide organization and transparency for students. These templates can be used individually as a complete package or pages from different templates can be combined to meet your needs. The new 2021 Course Template options are based on the Backwards Design model as well as the essential standards of the Quality Matters (QM) rubric.

Canvas Corner: Updated Features – MathJax, Gradebook: View Ungraded as Zero, Pretty HTML Editor

On February 20th, 2021, Canvas released 3 feature updates: MathJax is loaded if Canvas detects an equation image added by LaTeX delimited characters. Gradebook: View Ungraded as Zero is a visual change only and does not affect any grades. Pretty HTML Editor includes an enhancement to the Rich Content Editor in addition to the raw HTML editor. A comprehensive summary of these features is highlighted below. MathJax Summary LaTeX equations can be entered in any Canvas text field, and MathJax is loaded if Canvas detects an equation image added by delimited LaTeX characters. Benefit LaTeX equations can be entered in any Canvas text field, and MathJax is loaded if Canvas detects an equation image added by delimited LaTeX characters. Manually Entered Equations Equations can be added manually in any Canvas area that includes a text field, such as the title of an assignment or in a calendar event. Canvas Corner: The New Rich Content Editor

On October 17th, Canvas released a feature updates to the New Canvas Rich Content Editor.  There are considerable differences between the two editors. Beginning with the Winter 2021 term, the New Canvas Rich Content Editor will be turned on at the institution level.  The most notable difference in the Rich Content Editor (RCE) is the look and feel. Here, you can see the current RCE and what the new RCE looks like. The New RCE will be available in Announcements, Pages, Quizzes, Discussions, Syllabus, and Assignments.  Current Rich Content Editor In the Current Rich Content Editor, the menu on the right allows you to create links to content in your course, add files, and insert images. In the New Rich Content Editor, the menu on the right disappears and these options are included as drop-down items in the toolbar. The toolbar items are described and illustrated below. Deep Dive Into Course Analytics In Canvas

Learning how to use the analytics available about your course in Canvas is critical, particularly with online courses, to understand student participation and engagement, as well as locating positive and negative trends. This will give you the information necessary to make revisions to improve overall course quality. By using the built-in Canvas analytics, you can identify students who are struggling, problematic assessment questions, and get a handle on trends such as late submissions or erratic course participation. Course Analytics Course analytics will show you activity, assignment submissions, grades, and provide student statistics. You can view analytics in both active and concluded courses.
