Introducing the Foundations of Teaching Online Series

Are you looking to hone your online teaching skills? The LEC is excited to announce its Fall lineup of faculty professional development including its new Wednesday Workshop Series, which focuses on the Foundations of Teaching Online. Whether you’re new to teaching online or are looking for new ideas to implement in your online and blended classes, our Wednesday Workshop Series will introduce you to the basics of teaching and learning in online and blended learning environments. While the workshops focus on strategies for teaching online, most can be applied to any modality. Below is a listing of the future workshops with links to their descriptions and registration information.  Workshops will be held via Zoom on the following Wednesdays from 12:00-1:00 p.m. Each workshop in the series is independent, feel free to attend one or all of the workshops. The use of technology provides a more tailored experience that can empower your students. There are several classroom hardware and software tools such as, the classroom cameras, microphones, Poll Everywhere, and the Canvas LMS that provide a way to interact with your students with activities designed for you to interact with your students, ask questions, drive participation in group activities, and encourage students to share thoughts and insights from their phones or computers to stimulate engagement. This workshop aims to enhance your delivery of instruction using classroom technology. Universal Design builds on the notion that what is essential for some is often good for everybody. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) applies this notion to learning, providing a framework to support diverse students in a way that is beneficial for everyone. In this session, Dr. Orellana will introduce the UDL framework and principles, and present resources and examples to get started with UDL.

Diving into Fall: Plagiarism and Using TurnitIn with Canvas

If you have writing assignments in your course, then you already know that plagiarism can be a problem. This workshop will present the tool, Turnitin, which helps identify instances of potential plagiarism. During the workshop, you will learn about the various ways in which Turnitin can be used in your Canvas course so that you can begin screening writing assignments for plagiarism, as well as grammatical errors.

Zoom News: Focus Mode

Zoom News

Inside of a recent Zoom Update to the desktop software (5.7.5), there is a great feature for those instructors who are teaching online courses. When delivering instruction, especially via Zoom it can be challenging for faculty to keep students focused on the instruction. The new feature, called Focus Mode, once enabled allows the instructor to prevent student’s video streams from distracting each other by displaying only student’s names instead of their video stream. The instructor will still see the students’ video and students will see the instructor in addition to their own video stream. With two clicks the instructor can disable Focus Mode to allow for a class discussion and can easily be shifted back when appropriate.

Online Course Readiness Checklist – Part 4 of 4

The Learning and Educational Center supports all instructors in the development and advancement of their courses. We developed a checklist based on the Quality Matters Rubric and adapted it from a similar checklist from Western Kentucky University which allows instructors to quickly determine their course readiness as it relates to the Quality Matters (QM) Rubric. The Course Readiness Checklist was designed and aligned with the 8 Standards of the Quality Matters Rubric.  For reference, we have documented the relevant QM Standard in the checklist.
