LEC Fall 2025 Research Workshop Series:
Research in Action: The Why and How of Research Methodologies
Unlock your research potential with the Research Revealed Series. This five-part professional development experience is designed to empower faculty at all levels. Whether you are just starting out or returning to research, this series will build your confidence and skills in research methodologies that drive meaningful inquiry: quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, and evidence-based research using the PICOT Framework (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, Time). Through guided discussions, interactive activities, and real-world examples, you will discover how to apply these methodologies effectively in academic, health care, and professional settings. Join a supportive network of peers growing together as confident researchers designing, conducting, and contributing impactful research advances in your field, health care practice, and in local and distant communities.
We encourage you to register for the full workshop series to gain the most benefit. You are welcome to attend as many sessions as your schedule allows. All sessions will be recorded and shared with the registrants.
Workshop Series Learning Objectives:
By the end of the Research Revealed Series, participants will:
1. Describe the key characteristics and purposes of quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, and PICOT-based research approaches with confidence.
2. Identify which research questions align best with each methodology, helping to shape your own research focus.
3. Select the most appropriate research methodology tailored to your specific interests and professional goals.
4. Apply foundational research concepts to begin designing and conducting studies using one of the methodologies introduced, supported by practical tools and peer collaboration.

Research Revealed: Finding Your Starting Point
Ready to start or refocus your research goals? This first session of the Research Revealed Series provides a foundational overview of the core research methodologies that drive meaningful inquiry in academic, clinical, and professional settings. Through guided discussions and interactive digital activities, you will explore the essential characteristics of quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, and evidence-based research using the PICOT framework. Whether you are new to research or returning with fresh questions, this session will help you identify the best methodological approach for your interests and prepare you for deeper exploration in the sessions ahead.

Foundations of Quantitative Research: Ask. Visualize. Analyze.
This 1-hour faculty development workshop offers a clear and practical introduction to the fundamentals of quantitative research. Designed for educators and clinicians to build their research skills, this session explores common research designs, key concepts, and the structure of effective quantitative research questions. Participants will engage in guided, hands-on activities using sample datasets, simple data visualizations, and generative AI tools to support basic data collection and analysis. Emphasis will be placed on selecting appropriate methods, interpreting data trends, and addressing challenges common to applied research. By the end of the session, participants will have foundational skills to begin integrating quantitative methods into scholarly or practice-based projects, with exposure to how generative AI tools can streamline early-stage research tasks.

Qualitative Research: The Stories Behind the Data
Are you ready to move beyond numbers and uncover the human stories behind your research questions? This insightful 1-hour workshop invites faculty to explore the power and potential of qualitative research. You will learn about key approaches including case study, ethnography, phenomenology, and grounded theory, and what makes qualitative research trustworthy and impactful. Discover how to transform everyday skills like observation, interviewing, and group discussions into powerful data collection methods. See how generative-AI tools can help you organize and analyze narrative data efficiently. By the end, you will understand how qualitative inquiry can bring depth and meaning to your research areas that inspire you. This session will also prepare you for the next workshop in the series, where you will explore how to combine qualitative and quantitative approaches through mixed-methods research.

The Best of Both Worlds: Exploring Mixed Methods Research
This session introduces faculty to the fundamentals of mixed methods research across disciplines, highlighting how combining qualitative and quantitative approaches can offer comprehensive insights into complex health questions. Participants will explore key definitions, study design elements, and real-world examples from health sciences, along with a discussion of strengths and challenges. By the end, faculty will be prepared to thoughtfully consider incorporating mixed methods into their own research projects.

Evidence-Based PICOT Framework: Structure Your Inquiry. Strengthen Your Impact
This 1-hour interactive workshop welcomes faculty to explore the PICOT framework, a practical and flexible tool for crafting clear, evidence-based research questions. While widely used in healthcare, PICOT (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, Time) is equally valuable in education, business, the social sciences, and beyond. You will learn how PICOT leads to evidence-based clinical decision-making, program development, and practice improvement across diverse professional settings. Through guided examples and activities, Participants will build the skills to formulate clear, focused research questions that inform evidence-based inquiry and outcomes that are relevant, actionable, and timely.
