OIIT Special Announcement – SharkMedia / Kaltura Video Changes – New Player – Modified features
NSU’s Office of Innovation and Information Technology the LEC is sharing that there will be some noticeable updates to videos hosted in SharkMedia our branded Kaltura media server. These updates are detailed below and are fantastic, but there is chance that some video content that has been embedded into web pages or courses may not work properly. In the event you have content that does not appear properly, there is information below about how to get help fixing it.
What is changing?
There are several noticeable upgrades to the new player. We are migrating from a player version 2 to a player version 7 that contains a modern look with under the hood improvements that allow video content to load faster. There is improved Chapters identification with the chapters being found directly on the scrubber. There is an improved interface for the In Video Quiz Tool. Transcripts now appear on the side and can be hidden by the user. Additionally, there is a slim player available for Audio only files perfect for hosting a podcast or other recording as well as the ability to easily download attachments from within an embedded video. Check out a guide on the differences between the old and new players from Kaltura.
When is it changing?
Effective today December 16th, 2024, all video content hosted within SharkMedia / Kaltura will have a new player experience.
What should I look out for?
The player changes are happening with no action required by any users.
OIIT does want to advise that some videos that were shared via embed codes generated from the SharkMedia website may not be fully functional. It is advised that Faculty and Staff take a look at any locations where they have shared video from generated embed codes that they copied from SharkMedia and pasted into the HTML side of Canvas, a public webpage or other application.
Videos that are not loading will appear with a spinning rainbow icon as pictured below.
It is important to note that any video content that was created with the Kaltura button on the Canvas Rich Content Editor, or content that lives only in the Course Media Gallery is anticipated to work perfectly fine. This video illustrates the different scenarios that could lead to a video with a broken link.
How can I get help?
If you have a video where the embed code has broken, don’t fear, the LMS Team can help you. They will ask you to submit a ticket and include information about where the broken video can be found, the name of the assignment, page, announcement, etc. and the URL of the video. If you are familiar with editing HTML, you can copy and paste the video embed code for the page or the full-page HTML and include that in your ticket. Be sure to mention in the description that you are having an issue with the video loading.
