Faculty Book Club: Understanding How Learning Works
How Learning Works: 7 Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching written by Susan A. Ambrose, Michael W. Bridges, Michele DiPietro, Marsha C. Lovett, Marie K. Norman.
Whether you are a new faculty member wondering how to translate your content knowledge to your students, or an experienced faculty member who would like to up your game, the principles found in this book can help both you and your students. As noted in the forward of the book “The strength of this book is that it combines research evidence and practical advice to produce an evidence-based approach to improving your college teaching. If you are interested in what the science of learning has to contribute to your college teaching, then this book is for you.” (p. xv)
Each session will begin with an overview of a chapter, then a discussion on our experiences with that principle, followed by thoughts on how that principle might be applied in upcoming classes. The sessions will not be recorded so that discussions can be open and frank. Dr. Kathleen Hagen will present the overview and moderate the discussions.
