As we transition into the fall semester, we likely have a newfound interest and expertise in various aspects of teaching and learning from the way we use technology to how we are respecting learner diversity, and more. This is a facilitated drop-in session where you can join us for the full hour or for just a few minutes to talk about some ideas you are exploring for the fall term. Whether you are teaching online, face-to-face, or a blend, join us to share the ideas you are exploring.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, most classrooms around campus have been outfitted with newer technology, and if you haven’t taught in this new classroom environment, it may take a little practice to become familiar with the technology in the classroom. This hands-on training will give you some instruction along with a practice session to help you gain confidence with starting up and using the technology in classrooms at NSU. We will guide you through logging in, starting a zoom session, enabling projectors, testing audio, testing cameras, and sharing an activity to an audience. Prior attendance of our Leveraging Classroom Technology workshops or Teaching in the BlendFlex Models training session is highly recommended.

In this one-hour session, we will define reflection, why it is important, and how it can be used in the classroom to facilitate transformational learning experiences in face-to-face, online, and blended learning environments.

The Learning and Educational Center recently released three new Canvas course templates that support effective online teaching practices for faculty and students. Each template can save faculty valuable development time while bolstering their effort to ensure that courses are quality-focused and accessible to all learners. Now that you are aware of the new template options, you may be wondering how to use one or more of these templates in your course.  Well, no wondering necessary! Let us help you navigate importing and taking advantage of the templates to suit your needs in our upcoming workshop on the New LEC 2021 Templates. 

On the first day of class, students are often intimidated by a syllabus that looks more like legal documents than an invitation to learn. This leads to students just ignoring its contents and instructors constantly saying, “it’s in the syllabus”. Infographics offer a visual option for communicating key course content in a way that is engaging and more memorable. Participants in this hands-on session will learn how to create infographics using Piktochart (Canva can also be used) to communicate course content and share ways to use infographics for learning.

The purpose of this session is to discuss how Zoom can be used to facilitate various instructional approaches (e.g., lecture, demonstration, retrieval practice, role play, think tank/brainstorm, quiet meetings, and Socratic dialogue). An overview of selected approaches will be presented followed by strategies for using Zoom features to facilitate the approach.

A module-based structure can be beneficial to students by establishing a logical sequence of tasks and emphasizing the connections between course components. In this workshop, you will learn how to use module organization and scaffolded instruction to create an intuitive flow in your Canvas course. 

If you have writing assignments in your course, then you already know that plagiarism can be a problem. This workshop will present the tool, Turnitin, which helps identify instances of potential plagiarism. During the workshop, you will learn about the various ways in which Turnitin can be used in your Canvas course so that you can begin screening writing assignments for plagiarism, as well as grammatical errors.

Engaging students at a distance and in the classroom can present challenges.  Poll Everywhere provides a way to interact with your students with activities designed to ask questions, drive participation in group activities, and encourage students to share thoughts and insights from their phones or computers. 

Have you ever had to have the alignment checked on your car because it kept veering to one side? Maybe you have had a spinal alignment done to relieve back pain.  Just like anything else that can lose effectiveness once the alignment is off track, your course can be misaligned and potentially throw your students off track.  A misaligned course contains gaps in learning objectives, activities, assignments, and/or assessments. In this one-hour workshop, we will discuss the components of well-written learning objectives and their connection, or alignment, to activities and assessments in your course.
