Universal Design for Learning (UDL)-based instruction promotes inclusive learning that meets the diverse needs of all students. Three UDL principles, nine guidelines, and 31 checkpoints guide the creation of an instructional environment, lessons, and curricula. However, given the myriad of pedagogical and technological options, where and how do we start implementing UDL in an online course? What are some practices or tips to get started in Canvas? In this session, Dr. Orellana will share and discuss with participants practical implementation ideas to design Canvas courses according to UDL.

We are nearing the end of summer and have reached our destination! Our Canvas course is ready to go. In this session, we will review the Canvas Course Roadmap to ensure we are all set for welcoming our students in the fall. Resources to support course design and delivery will be provided.

There are a variety of ways to organize your content in Canvas. In this session, we will discuss best practices in course organization including chunking, sequencing, and providing variety.

Hear from experts on a variety of educational technology topics and learn how they have made Canvas an integral part of their instructional practice. There is usually something for everyone at this event, whether a Canvas expert, or if you are just starting out, our instructional designers have always come back with some new knowledge. Because it is online this year, you can attend from anywhere and it is totally free.

One of the most impactful things you can do to get your course off to a good start is welcoming your students. In this session, we will discuss strategies you can use to welcome your students and make them feel part of your online learning community.

Once we’ve determined where we are going on our road trip, how do we know when we’ve arrived? In this session, we will explore what is acceptable evidence that our students have achieved the course objectives. We will discuss how to use a variety of formative and summative assessments, how to make assessments authentic, and how we can use rubrics to guide our feedback and grading.

When we go on a road trip, one of the first decisions we need to make is where we want to go. Similarly, when designing a course, we need to be clear on our course goals and objectives. In this session, we will review our course goals and objectives to ensure they have enduring value and align with broader program goals. We will also discuss strategies for presenting the course objectives in Canvas so that students can see how they align with course content. Finally, we will introduce the Canvas Course Roadmap, a visual tool for organizing all of your course components, which we will use throughout the Summer Road Trip series.

In this workshop, we will discuss the foundational knowledge and skills needed to teach effectively in Canvas. While this session is not training on how to build courses in Canvas, participants will gain an overall understanding of how the Canvas LMS is used at NSU, what Canvas components should be included in academic courses, and where to find help and support.
