Canvas Corner: New Assigning Options

Canvas continues to add new features and updates to the LMS with new assigning options that include the ability to assign entire modules, ungraded discussions, and pages. There are also new “assign to” buttons on landing pages for assignments, discussions, and quizzes.

You will now be able to assign ungraded discussions and pages to students. This will allow you, for example, to set availability dates for pages or assign different pages to different students. This will also allow you to include pages and ungraded discussions in Mastery Paths, and to create individualized learning opportunities that can now include these elements to be assigned to specific students. Further, if ungraded discussions or pages are assigned to students, they will show up in their calendar notifications the way other graded elements do.

Another recent change is the ability to assign entire modules or individual module items to individual students. This will allow you to set up differentiated learning elements based on your course needs. By default, modules will be assigned to the entire class as was the case before, however if you choose to assign a module, or certain module items, to specific students, that content will automatically be visible only to those who have been granted access. You will be given the option to assign to “everyone else” if you intend to assign the content to the whole class but you are setting up different due dates for particular students, for example. If modules have been assigned to individual students, a link will appear for instructors next to the module title that says, “View Assign To” to easily see that the module has been differentiated or to edit the visibility. Finally, the “Add Module” and “Edit Module Settings” pages have been redesigned as trays which pop out from the side.

Here is how the changes will look:

Landing pages for Assignments, Discussions, and Quizzes:

A Canvas Assignment page is shown. An arrow points to the Assign To Button to the right of the assignment title.

Assign Module and Edit Module Settings from Modules page:

A Modules section of a Canvas course is shown. Arrows point to the 3 dot menu to the right of the module, a View Assign To link, and the Edit Module Settings page that contains Settings and Assign To tabs. On the Assign To tab, an arrow points to the Assign To dropdown, where you can select who the module will be asssigned to.

Assign module items or edit assigning details for course content directly from Modules page:

A Canvas module is shown. An arrow points to the 3 dot menu to the right of an assignment in the module. The menu is expanded, and an arrow points to the Assign To... option.
